Combination to Oily Skin: How to Care for It

Having a combination of oily skin can be a daily challenge. Between excessive shine, enlarged pores, and blemishes, this skin type can be uncomfortable and sometimes frustrating. We're here to help you better understand your skin so you can care for it properly with our blemish-fighting routine.

How to Identify If You Have Combination or Oily Skin

A combination to oily skin is typically characterized by a T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) that tends to be oilier and prone to shine. Pores in this area are often enlarged and visible, with an increased tendency toward blackheads and blemishes. Meanwhile, the cheeks may have normal or even dry areas, creating a contrast with the shine of the T-zone.

If you notice that your skin tends to become "oily" quickly after cleansing, especially in these specific areas, while remaining more balanced or dry elsewhere, you likely have combination to oily skin.

Why Is Skin Combination or Oily?

It all comes down to the epidermis, the top layer of skin. It's primarily composed of keratinocytes, cells that produce keratin, an essential protein that defends against external aggressors. Between these cells, a lipid matrix helps maintain water inside the cells. On the surface, a film of sebum keeps cells hydrated.

A combination to oily skin is characterized by excessive sebum production, mainly in the T-zone, which leads to blemishes (shiny skin, enlarged pores, and imperfections like blackheads and breakouts).

It's important to understand that skin produces sebum to protect itself from external aggressors and prevent dehydration. Sebum often has a negative reputation because we associate it with acne, shiny skin, and uneven texture, but it's not all bad! If the skin produces sebum, it's because it needs it to maintain cellular hydration. If you eliminate it too aggressively, your skin will produce even more. This is the famous "rebound effect."

Using products that are too harsh, drying, or unsuitable can strip the skin, dehydrate it, and increase the risk of dermatological issues such as acne, redness, and dry patches.
To properly care for skin, it's essential to always address its three fundamental needs: hydration, nourishment, and protection. This includes providing water, preserving the intercellular lipid matrix, and strengthening the skin barrier against external aggressors like UV rays and pollution.

The main goal of the combination of oily skin is to regulate sebum production while providing the necessary hydration and protection.
